Sharks down Jets, fall to Rebels

Well done to everyone that played in our first Saturday games of the season this past weekend. It was the third weekend in a row on the road, so it was good we were able to field the 10 players that we did. The results were a bit mixed on the day, with a pleasing win over an under-strength Coventry Jets team, before a disappointing - and somewhat controversial - loss to the London Rebels. Off to our customary slow start, it wasn't until the 2nd half that we managed to pull away from a Jets team that struggled to move the ball against our dominating Defense. Neil Henderson was on good form, throwing no picks and 4 TDs in the game - 2 of which went to gammy legged…

Sharks Sweep Warriors

Just 7 days after a very wet encounter with the Warriors on their home field, the Sharks swept the series against the Welsh with an emphatic 46-13 victory in Winchester this past Sunday. Having quickly fallen behind by 2 scores last week, we were again on our heels early on as the Warriors used their speed and elusiveness to break tackles and score on a quick slant that went the distance. Confidence in our ability to come back - as proven last week - meant a calm Sharks O went to work, and quickly started racking up the scores. With a few Offense regulars unavailable for the fixture, new faces stepped up and made their mark. Most notable was James Taylor, who used his his most extensive time on O…

It rained a bit in Wales…

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="270" caption="It was unorthodox but the conditions meant the 'carrier bag catch' technique was a necessity"][/caption] Well done to everyone that played in our two league matches this weekend in Wales. To say that the conditions were not ideal would be an understatement. Despite frequent heavy rain throughout both matches, everyone played hard and focused. I think I speak for everyone when I say we were disappointed with the result against Leicester, but we should all be proud of how we played. For anyone reading this who was not there, we narrowly lost 31-25 to the Eagles, with their final score coming right near the end of the game. We had taken the lead part way through the 2nd half but were unable to stop the methodical…

Sharks win double against Kings and Thrashers

(First off, apologies for lack of updating on the website recently: moving house and work have kept me very busy) Last Sunday saw the Chichester Sharks travel to St. Albans to face the home town Kings and league new boys Hampshire Thrashers. The Sharks, coming off a disappointing loss to the Eagles the previous fortnight, were eager to get back on track for their run at the playoffs. Reassuringly, the team were back on form as they notched up two very encouraging victories. On a very warm, sunny day, the Sharks played their two matches back to back having refereed the Thrashers victory over the Kings in the first game. In what became a pattern on the day, the Sharks and Thrashers were pretty even for the first half of…

The 2009 BAFL Flag Season Starts Now

The much awaited and much delayed 2009 season finally kicks off this weekend as the Chichester Sharks host the Leicester Eagles and London Rebels in a 3 way fixture. The 3 matches will be played at a new venue this weekend - Bourne Community Leisure Centre in Southbourne (map)- with kickoff scheduled for 12 noon. This will be the first competitive league match the Sharks have played since the heartbreaking lost to the Eagles last August, which eliminated them from the BAFL Flag Championship playoffs. The Eagles are expected to again play to their usual high standard, whilst new boys the Rebels bring their high scoring attack to the league. Sharks players are to arrive for warm ups and a light scrimmage at 11 a.m. All players must wear gum…

New Season Nearly Upon Us

With the 2009 BAFL Flag season running from April to September the football is about to get serious again! It seems like an age since we last played a competitive game that meant something (7 months if you're counting at home) and I know many of you are eager to get going again. There are several new faces on the Sharks this year - Rob, Mike, Alex, Ben and Bob to name just a handful - the result of a good off season of recruitment. We have a good squad size now, hopefully we can start getting everyone to turn up on the same day now! There are also some new teams in our conference this year, with the London Rebels, Hampshire Thrashers and South Wales Warriors joining the fight.…

Preseason Flag Football Friendlies

Well done to all those who participated today in friendlies with Peter Symonds Sabres and the Zombie Horde of Basingstoke. It was an incredibly cold day but that didn't stop some great football being played in good spirits. I don't have the actual scores to hand but the final results stand as: Horde beat Sabres Sharks beat Horde Sharks beat Sabres (EDIT: Horde 45 - Sabres 20, Horde 20 - Sharks 47, Sharks 13 - Sabres 12 - Thanks Martyn) Thank you very much to both the visiting teams for joining us today. Hopefully, you enjoyed the day as much as we did. Despite all the shivering! Special mentions today, go to ourĀ 6 new players - Charlie, Ben, Darren, Mike, Alex and Rob. At the start of the day they…
