Sharks #2 team in England, #4 in Britain

The Sharks travelled north on Saturday to take on the cream of British flag football in their first appearance at the BAFL Flag Finals Day. Having finished second in the English conference during the regular season, the Sharks were drawn to meet defending British champions and Scottish conference winners Kirkcaldy Bulls in the semi finals, held at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium. The Bulls proved formidable opponents, with a well-executed run option scheme and pin-point passing keeping the Sharks defence at bay, and the Scots notched up 3 TDs in the first half. The Sharks were a fingertip away from a score themselves, when QB Martyn Emmens spotted Simon Merton wide open in the end zone, only for a Bulls defender to scramble back and tip his pass away with the faintest…

Sharks Qualify for Finals Day in Doncaster

A great season by the Sharks was rewarded with a place in the Semi-Finals yesterday, as the Rebels lost their final game against the Eagles and fell out of contention. London's lost meant that both they and the Sharks finished with 11-3 records on the season. However, with the head-to-head tiebreaker even at 1-1, the Sharks took the final place by merit of a 44-40 aggregate scoreline over the two fixtures this year. Chichester now join the first place Leicester Eagles as the English representatives at the BAFL Flag Finals Day in Doncaster next Saturday (5th Sept.). The two Scottish representatives are Kirkcaldy Bulls and the Carluke Cobras. Sharks will play the Bulls in the semi-final. We need the best squad available for the trip so please do everything you…

Sharks dethrone Kings

UPDATED: Well done everyone that played day - it was a great way to end the season. For those not there, Sharks beat Kings 60-12 in a very good natured game. Thanks to St. Albans for making the trip and being good opponents. The regular season is now complete, and the Sharks finished with a 11-3 record. This leaves us either 2nd or 3rd in the table, subject to the Eagles/Rebels result next week. If we finish 2nd, the Sharks will be going to the playoffs. Whilst we only played 1 league match on the day, we crammed a lot into that 40 minutes. For a start, the Defense was awesome. The Kings completed 2 long passes to set up their only scores on the day, but other than that…

Sharks down Jets, fall to Rebels

Well done to everyone that played in our first Saturday games of the season this past weekend. It was the third weekend in a row on the road, so it was good we were able to field the 10 players that we did. The results were a bit mixed on the day, with a pleasing win over an under-strength Coventry Jets team, before a disappointing - and somewhat controversial - loss to the London Rebels. Off to our customary slow start, it wasn't until the 2nd half that we managed to pull away from a Jets team that struggled to move the ball against our dominating Defense. Neil Henderson was on good form, throwing no picks and 4 TDs in the game - 2 of which went to gammy legged…

Sharks Sweep Warriors

Just 7 days after a very wet encounter with the Warriors on their home field, the Sharks swept the series against the Welsh with an emphatic 46-13 victory in Winchester this past Sunday. Having quickly fallen behind by 2 scores last week, we were again on our heels early on as the Warriors used their speed and elusiveness to break tackles and score on a quick slant that went the distance. Confidence in our ability to come back - as proven last week - meant a calm Sharks O went to work, and quickly started racking up the scores. With a few Offense regulars unavailable for the fixture, new faces stepped up and made their mark. Most notable was James Taylor, who used his his most extensive time on O…

It rained a bit in Wales…

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="270" caption="It was unorthodox but the conditions meant the 'carrier bag catch' technique was a necessity"][/caption] Well done to everyone that played in our two league matches this weekend in Wales. To say that the conditions were not ideal would be an understatement. Despite frequent heavy rain throughout both matches, everyone played hard and focused. I think I speak for everyone when I say we were disappointed with the result against Leicester, but we should all be proud of how we played. For anyone reading this who was not there, we narrowly lost 31-25 to the Eagles, with their final score coming right near the end of the game. We had taken the lead part way through the 2nd half but were unable to stop the methodical…

Tough Schedule Run Starts This Sunday

This coming Sunday sees the Sharks begin the first leg of what could be a difficult four week run of 8 BAFL Flag fixtures. Due to the late start of the season this year, we have a stockpile of games to play mid-season, starting with 2 away games this Sunday in Cardiff. We'll be playing against league new boys South Wales Warriors and the old 'enemy' the Leicester Eagles. The next three weeks will then see us travel to Winchester and London, before playing the first of 2 August home tournaments in Chichester. View the full schedule. Check back after Sunday to see how the Sharks fared.

Player Stats to date

Following games against Leicester, London, Hampshire and St. Albans to start the season, we have the first player stats table available. Whilst Neil is uncontested in the passing category, the leading receiver competition is hotting up. Leading the pack is veteran Simon Merton with 4 scores, separated from 2nd place receiver Scott Wilson by merit of his 4 XP to Scott's 2. Rounding out the top 3 is the 2nd old boy, Gary Robinson (me) with 3 scores. The defense is looking particularly impressive this year, with 3 players with picks, including one returned for a score from Martyn Emmens. Josh Amis is off to a great start in his rookie season, notching 4 sacks, 3 of which have resulted in safeties.

[table id=3…

Sharks win double against Kings and Thrashers

(First off, apologies for lack of updating on the website recently: moving house and work have kept me very busy) Last Sunday saw the Chichester Sharks travel to St. Albans to face the home town Kings and league new boys Hampshire Thrashers. The Sharks, coming off a disappointing loss to the Eagles the previous fortnight, were eager to get back on track for their run at the playoffs. Reassuringly, the team were back on form as they notched up two very encouraging victories. On a very warm, sunny day, the Sharks played their two matches back to back having refereed the Thrashers victory over the Kings in the first game. In what became a pattern on the day, the Sharks and Thrashers were pretty even for the first half of…
