The 2009 BAFL Flag Season Starts Now

The much awaited and much delayed 2009 season finally kicks off this weekend as the Chichester Sharks host the Leicester Eagles and London Rebels in a 3 way fixture. The 3 matches will be played at a new venue this weekend - Bourne Community Leisure Centre in Southbourne (map)- with kickoff scheduled for 12 noon. This will be the first competitive league match the Sharks have played since the heartbreaking lost to the Eagles last August, which eliminated them from the BAFL Flag Championship playoffs. The Eagles are expected to again play to their usual high standard, whilst new boys the Rebels bring their high scoring attack to the league. Sharks players are to arrive for warm ups and a light scrimmage at 11 a.m. All players must wear gum…

Running the London Marathon for Charity

Next Sunday (26th April), Mike Thompson will be running the London Marathon to help to raise money for the Rockinghorse Appeal, a Brighton based charity which provides equipment and funds for local children's health facilities in the Sussex Area. The Marathon is just one way Mike is raising money for the charity - the crazy fool is also running the Chicago Marathon in October and doing the London to Brighton Bike Ride in June. The charity has personal significance to Mike. One of the facilities that has benefited from the charity's support is the Royal Alexandra Childrens hospital. Mike's sister was taken when she was diagnosed diabetic in 2005. Since then they have been able to move to a new purpose-built facility, thanks in part to the Rockinghorse Appeal’s work.…

No Sharks Training Sunday – Crusaders Instead

There is no Sharks training this weekend, as the Crusaders squad will be training for the first time together at the New Park ground. Due to the Sharks having several players in the squad, plus the Sharks coaches, it is unfortunately not possible to run both sessions. Normal Sharks training will resume next Sunday.

Crusaders Flag Football Trials

Well done to all who participated in the trials for the Crusaders regional programme this weekend in Chichester. There was a very good turn out with 17 players in attendance. Dayle Kirby and Dave Lee put the players through a variety of tests including the 40 yard sprint, 3 cone drill, db drill, snapping, throwing and scrimmages. This was the second trial session, following one in Coventry recently. All players will be notified of the result of their try out this week. If successful they will join the Crusaders regional squad and have the opportunity to be selected for the Great Britain Lions squad that will attend the European championships later this year. Chichester Chairman joins BAFL Strategic Team

It was announced this week that Chichester Sharks Chairman (and coach and QB!), Neil Henderson has been appointed to the new BAFL Strategic Team. [caption id="attachment_514" align="alignright" width="134" caption="Neil Henderson, BAFL Strategic Team"][/caption] Neil will be the flag representative for England and Wales, whilst Mark Fletcher takes on the same role for Scotland. Both have been tasked to help support the BAFL Directors in running of BAFL Flag. The extent of their roles have yet to be finalised, but it is hoped by many in the league that this move will lead to improved communication between the Committee and the member clubs. One of the first tasks for Mark and Neil is to organise the fixture list for the 2009 season. Well done to Neil for volunteering to take on…

New Season Nearly Upon Us

With the 2009 BAFL Flag season running from April to September the football is about to get serious again! It seems like an age since we last played a competitive game that meant something (7 months if you're counting at home) and I know many of you are eager to get going again. There are several new faces on the Sharks this year - Rob, Mike, Alex, Ben and Bob to name just a handful - the result of a good off season of recruitment. We have a good squad size now, hopefully we can start getting everyone to turn up on the same day now! There are also some new teams in our conference this year, with the London Rebels, Hampshire Thrashers and South Wales Warriors joining the fight.…
